Ski the Sweater (Mt. Cardigan, NH)
Checking in at around 1,824 feet of skiable elevation on a half day tour of Mt. Cardigan, this activity offers a unique and historic backcountry touring experience. With an AMC hut at the base, this mountain has hosted skiers for almost a century since the Civilian Conservation Corps cut the ski trails in the 1930s. The full tour includes summit of adjacent Mt. Firescrew and traverse to Mt. Cardigan (or reverse route.) Due to a large fire in the 19th century, Mt. Cardigan has a nearly treeless summit, giving skiers and riders the opportunity to find some of the southernmost steep snowfields in New Hampshire and several vintage trails through the woods. This tour can be done as a traverse and ski down in either direction from the same start point, each route taking approximately 2-3 hours to complete. Requirements: SKILLS + EXPERIENCE - Advanced to Expert resort skier, comfortable in tight trees and variable conditions - Fitness level to ascend roughly 1,800 ft with gear GEAR - Alpine touring or Telemark skis, splitboards are welcome too. - Crampons and ice axe highly recommended
